Unbeknownst to me, I used a machine someone was already on. He was gone for a minute, didn't even think about, in my foggy state. When he came back, I asked if he wanted to get back on. He snapped at me, kinda made me feel bad, picked up his stuff and went to a different machine.
My nature is to be polite, respectful of all people. It hurt my feelings, even after I apologized,he seemed unnecessarily annoyed.
For the next few minutes, I wondered what was happening in that man's day to cause him to lash out at a stranger, for something completely harmless. My heart strings pulled, suddenly feeling bad, not for myself, but, for whatever it was that originally upset that person. He must be having a bad day, I told myself. I'm a pleasant person, something so arbitrary couldn't have been the reason he was so mad.
Sure enough, a few minutes later, he approached me,sincerely apologized. He was having a TERRIBLE day, far worse than I imagined. Turned out to be a charming, friendly fellow gym goer.
Moral of the story: you never know what's going on in someone's life. Even the most random hello can be the only smile someone gets. #actsofkindnessworkwonders
